Sons of Liberty
Colonists who believed in No Taxation without Representation. They were responsible for the Boston Tea Party and other acts of vandalism. They also were abusive to Loyalists, especially tax collectors!

Boston Massacre
Students read primary sources from the murder trial of the British soldiers. Compare primary and secondary paintings of the event. Examine crime scene evidence to come to a conclusion of: Should the soldiers be found guilty of murder? or was it manslaughter? or was it self-defense?
KING'S M&M's
Taxation without representation. Students are randomly chosen to be King George III, British Parliament, a soldier and a tax collector. The rest of the class has to pay taxes based on the clothing they are wearing.
Colonial Punishments
In colonial times 'Whispering Sticks' were used in the classroom for students caught talking during a lesson.

Witch Trials
Students accused people who they thought might be a witch. Evidence was brought against them. The students who were on trial tried to defend themselves against the accusations.
Jamestown Council of 7
Who would you pick to be your President in Jamestown? Students learn about the Council of 7: their background, if they became President, and their fate.
Columbian Exchange
Students learned about the exchange of plants and animals between the Old and New Worlds after Columbus' voyage. They were assigned to make a meal based on the information they studied. The following are some of the meals they made.
Explorer Maps of America
Students try to put maps dating from 1492-1620 in chronological order.
Identify Spices (introduction to Explorers Unit)
A few lucky students got to taste pumpkin without any spices in it.
Students learned about different spices that were important during the Middle Ages and why they were important enough that sailors risked everything trying to get to Asia.

Each student illustrated 5 events that took place in this time period. These are just a few of the drawings.
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Each student was given one month of journal entries from the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They had to pick one entry and illustrate the event. The journal entry is on the top and the illustration for the entry is underneath.
WE NEED A HERO
When creating a government the founding fathers decided on 3 branches of government. In class we need some hero's to get the new government off the ground: Captain Executive, Iron Legislative and Super Judicial.

Factory Workers.
Students learned about factory life - good and bad. Now they get to experience factory life.
Slave for a day.
Students separate rice and beans. They are not allowed to speak but they can sing while they work.

Today students learned about the Triangle Trade - including the Middle Passage which brought slaves from Africa. This activity lets them experience the small, cramped conditions the slaves were forced to live in.
